Appeasing Hitler
The Munich Conference of 1938 |
After rising to dictator in Germany and creating the Nazi regime, Adolf Hitler became extremely aggressive. He violated the Treaty of Versailles in a multitude of ways, including secretly building up an army. He then reoccupied the Rhineland, a demilitarized zone in between Germany and France, and annexed Austria and the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia.
With Hitler's aggressive ambitions being clear as day, British Prime Minister Chamberlain made multiple visits to Germany in order to discuss Hitler's actions. However, no real threat or aggression was made by Britain to quell Germany's expansion, for they feared another war to the devastating scale of the Great War (1914-1918).
